Tulsi or Holy Basil is a sacred plant in Indian tradition. Known as “the incomparable one”, Tulsi holds incredible importance in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian spiritual practice. Both stimulating and uplifting to the mind, heart, and body.

Easily recognized as a member of the mint family, with its opposite leaves and square stem, Tulsi boasts a pungent flavor and a distinct aroma reminiscent of cloves, which it shares constituents with, such as the monoterpenoid eugenol.  Eugenol is known for its strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.

Holy Basil has been scientifically proven to benefit insulin receptors on cells by increasing insulin sensitivity. It is particularly wonderful for anxiety-related digestive issues due to its influence on the digestive and nervous systems. Tulsi’s actions in the digestive system are as a carminative, bringing blood flow to the digestive system.

Both uplifting and calming, Tulsi is a nervine sedative and nootropic. By increasing cerebral circulation, it enhances cognitive function and simultaneously creates a sense of peace and happiness.

Its actions within the immune system are significant. Within the respiratory tract, Tulsi addresses infections, sinus conditions, and fever. It has expectorant action, clearing mucus from the sinuses, throat, and upper bronchial tract, while protecting these areas with its antimicrobial properties. Its relaxant and diaphoretic properties increase circulation and stimulate sweat.

Tulsi’s adaptogen properties support the body’s ability to cope with and adapt to stress by acting on the HPA axis, endocrine system, and nervous system. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is a rejuvenative tonic herb.
